Well, most health care providers do not recommend douching to clean the vagina.  Douching changes the delicate chemical balance and ph (the acid base balance) in the vagina, which can increase the liklihood of vaginal infections.

Research shows that women who douche on a routine basis tend to have more problems than women who do not douche or who rarely douche.  These problems include

  • vaginal irritation
  • infections
  • pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

What effects will douching have on pregnancy?

The National Women’s Health Information Center indicates that:

Douching after sex does not prevent pregnancy.  But, research has shown that douching may affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant.  In women trying to become pregnant, those who douched the most often (more than once per week) had the lowest pregnancy rate.

In honor of October’s commemorative spotlight, we’ve gathered some invaluable information regarding breast cancer and prevention.

Early Detection is Critical -Three Common Myths:
• Only women with a family history of breast cancer are at risk – Those with a family history do have a higher risk; however, 80% of all women diagnosed have no known risk factors… other than being female and getting older (though women of all ages can develop breast cancer).
• All breast lumps are cancerous – 80% of lumps are caused by non-cancerous changes in the breast, most of which are age-related. However, any breast abnormality should be reported to a physician, especially if it persists after two menstrual cycles.
Breast Cancer only happens to women – While breast cancer mainly affects women, some men are susceptible to the disease. Although men also have breast cancer, the focus is usually on women. Because of this, men who suffer from breast cancer normally discover the disease later than women.

Notable HPV types and associated diseases

In 90% of cases, the body’s immune system clears HPV within two years all by itself. Certain types of HPV can cause genital warts, and occasionally can also cause warts in the throat (recurrent respiratory papillomatosis or RRP.)

Other HPV types can cause cervical cancer in women, and less common but serious cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and head and neck (tongue, tonsils and throat).

Signs and symptoms of HPV-related problems from CDC:

Genital warts usually appear as a small bump or groups of bumps in the genital area. They can be small or large, raised or flat, or shaped like a cauliflower. Health care providers can diagnose warts by looking at the genital area during an office visit. Warts can appear within weeks or months after sexual contact with an infected partner—even if the infected partner has no signs of genital warts. If left untreated, genital warts might go away, remain unchanged, or increase in size or number. They will not turn into cancer.

Cervical cancer usually does not have symptoms until it is quite advanced. For this reason, it is important for women to get regular screening for cervical cancer. Screening tests can find early signs of disease so that problems can be treated early, before they ever turn into cancer.

Other HPV-related cancers might not have signs or symptoms until they are advanced and hard to treat.  These include cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and head and neck. For signs and symptoms of these cancers, see

Human papillomavirus (also called HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are more than 40 HPV types and they can infect both  males and females. These HPV types can infect the genitals,  the mouth and the throat. Most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it!

HPV is not the same as herpes or HIV (the virus that causes AIDS). These are all viruses that can be passed on during sex, but they cause different symptoms and health problems. Check out this cool chart to understand your risk.
